PETALING JAYA: It was a scene of high kicks and powerful punches at the Tropicana City Mall on Sunday but unity was the winner as 250 exponents competed in the Milo-SportsUnite-Tropicana City Unity Taekwondo Poomsae Carnival.

The Under-12 and Under-18 carnival saw exponents from the Klang Valley competing in 12 categories - eight individual and four team.

The team event had a unique format as each two-exponent team were required to consist of different races.

"The theme of the carnival was unity and it was heartwarming to see exponents finding their own partners," said SportsUnite Sports Club chairman Datuk Dina Rizal.

"Many were meeting for the first time but formed instant friendships and this is what we want to see. The parents and coaches deserve a pat on their backs for encouraging the exponents."

Milo Sports Marketing Manager Ng Ping Loong said the carnival provided valuable exposure to the exponents.

"Not all exponents want to compete in sparring events and with poomsae (pattern) offering medals at the Sea Games, the carnival is a great way to provide exponents early exposure," said Ping Loong.

Organising secretary A. Prabagaran said the response augured well for the carnival.

"Though we limited participation to 200, we had to accept an additional 50 due to requests from parents and students."

Prabagaran said the carnival will most probably be held again during the year-end school holidays at the Tropicana City Mall.

Under-18 team: 1 Dinesh Sethu -Kok Hon Hong, 2 Ahmad RIdhwan -Low Shong Yang, 3 Kevin Ho-Sudasan, 4 Pravin Sivakumar -Timothy Yaw, 5 Timothy David Orr-Emyl Eyza Rahim.
