Three women on ‘eggs’-traordinary missions
New Straits Times, 28 July 2009
They may not be the 'Power Rangers' out to save the world, but three young women have embarked on an ''eggs-traordinary'' mission to protect turtle eggs.
Dubbed the 'Telur Rangers', Chong Hueng Meim, 29, Nelleisa Omar, 26, and Grace Duraisingham, 26, will travel in a Volkswagen car painted to appear like a turtle, for this purpose.
They intend to collect 100,000 signatures, calling for a stricter law to protect the eggs.
The World Wide Fund For Nature (WWF)-Malaysia has sent the trio on a two-week road trip beginning July 26, to accomplish their mission of supporting WWF Malaysia’s 'Egg=Life' turtle conservation petition.
WWF Peninsular Malaysia Seas Programme Manager P. Gangaram said protection for the turtle egg under the current state law was insufficient as countless eggs were found to have been stolen.
"I hope the government can improve the current law by forming another law under the federal legislation to give stronger protection of the turtle eggs," he said after flagging-off the 'Telur Rangers' on their mission, at the Tropicana City Mall here today.
The trip will see the 'Telur Rangers' collecting signatures from the public before ending at the Olympia College in Kuantan on Aug 8.
Gangaram said the programme was an effort by WWF to better protect turtle eggs, as well as turtle population in the country.
He said the government only concentrated on licensing turtle egg collectors, but added, it would be better to have a rule and regulation on selling turtle eggs, too.
